Most aggregate operations don't fail because of bad equipment or bad people. They fail because standards erode, ownership blurs, and accountability becomes optional. I've spent 15+ years fixing exactly that. Welder to leadman to plant manager, every step earned on the floor.
That path ran through quarry pits, a heavy equipment assembly line, and aggregate plants across Oklahoma and Texas. My focus is the opposite of erosion: operations where expectations are clear, ownership is shared, and performance is repeatable. The goal is simple: leave operations stronger than I found them, and develop people capable of carrying them even further.
How the efficiency numbers held: strategic employee placement and resolving priority issues in real time, instead of letting them stall the line.
How downtime dropped: catching defects before they reached the line, staging work so crews never had to hunt for it, and empowering the team to stop and fix instead of working through problems.
How engagement rose: listening to what people needed, protecting work/life balance, launching a recognition program, and running quarterly check-ins on where people stand.
I write about AI in the workplace because the distance between a boardroom slide deck and what actually works on a plant floor is wide. Most people writing about it have never run a crew.

The Internet of Rock is the transformation of quarries and mines from physical places into connected networks. Every machine touching the rock now generates a signal. The drill logs every foot it cuts. The crusher reports its own amp draw. The belt scale weighs product in motion. The loader counts its cycles. Those signals are being collected, transmitted, and stored by somebody, and the question underneath all of it has not been answered: who owns the signal?
I coined the term to name what I watched happen from the plant floor. The data coming off a connected operation is a second deposit. It sits on top of the first one, it never depletes, and the producers who generate it rarely control it. Data rights are the new mineral rights, and most of the industry is signing blind.
